Presentation
Improving healthcare treatment with new evidence, an influx of funding, international recognition, and career advancement are just a few of the many benefits associated with publishing medical research in peer-reviewed journals with a high impact factor. However, for many early career researchers, this avenue of opportunity remains closed. It is cordoned off by a lack of education on research design, medical ethics, and the journal publication process.

There is often a distinct absence of local resources to help medical researchers with the process of designing, conducting, writing, submitting, and publishing work.

Over the past 25 years, BMJ has witnessed the challenges researchers face, and has found a recent surge in the need for research training and curricula for institutions and universities to provide their students with the most relevant knowledge for success.

This clear problem has prompted NOVA Medical School and BMJ to collaborate in a online and presencial program that provides researchers with the education they need to become published authors.

Goals
- It leverages the recognised and longstanding capabilities and expertise of BMJ and UCSF in achieving the best research and in helping doctors and academics get their work published
- It is the only programme that combines a publisher with an academic institution
- It is focused 100% on medical research
- It supports research integrity and aims to encourage higher ethical standards
- It builds technical research capabilities and skills to improve research outputs and acceptance rates
- Where there is a career development need to get your research published, it can provide the learning required to achieve this
- With improved research outputs and acceptance rates, it offers the opportunity for institutions to receive increased funding for their research activities and to be recognised as a centre of research excellence

After successful completing the programme researchers will receive formal recognition with a certificate from The BMJ’s Editor-in-Chief. The will also be invited to submit their medical research protocols to BMJ Open and, for those that are accepted after peer review, the journal will offer a 50% reduction on the open access publication fee.

The aim is to provide an online educational tool that goes further than a standard medical writing course. It includes narrative videos and learning exercises across many topics, including what editors look for, publication ethics and how to conduct a medical trial. Research to Publication is focused on medical research and filled with expert knowledge while being flexible and learner-paced.

More than simply a course on “how to write a paper”, Research to Publication draws on the expertise of The BMJ’s research editors, and UCSF’s researchers and educators, and guides learners all the way from designing a study, to seeing it published successfully.

Curriculum
The program consists of two components:
1.  BMJ Research to Publication 48 modules, that build into 6 courses with 200 hours of learning. The comprehensive range of 48 online modules are focused entirely on clinical and public health research.
