Presentation
First edition of a course developed in collaboration between the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Ocidental and the Anatomy of the Nova Medical School in the surgical specialty of the Neck and Salivary Glands. This course is an update of a previous course organized by these two departments from 2011 to 2013..
The first day of the course will be dedicated to lectures about cervical surgery in emergency room, salivary glands surgery, laryngectomy, neck dissection and cervical benign pathology.
The next two days will be dedicated to the hands-on surgical dissection in human specimens (cadavers). Before the dissections, a tutorial video explaining the main steps of the procedures will be presented.
The objective of this course is the training on the more common procedures of the neck and salivary glands.
Objectives
General Objectives:
To develop the surgical skills to treat the diseases of the neck and salivary glands.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the surgical anatomy of the cervical region.
2. Interpret the radiological aspects of the diseases of the neck and salivary glands.
3. Select the surgical technique adequate to treat the diseases of the neck and salivary glands.
4. Describe the surgical techniques step by step.
5. Name the potential complications of these surgical techniques.
6. Complete the surgical techniques from the beginning to the end under supervision.
Syllabus
1. Cervical anatomy:
a) Neck (surgical anatomy and anatomic variations)
b) Larynx
c) Salivary glands
2. Neck pathology in emergency room and surgical indications:
a) Cervical abscess (danger space explained)
b) Upper airway dyspnea
c) Hemostase in head and neck
3. Cervical imagiology:
a) Cervical neoplasms
b) Cervical abscess
c) Upper airway evaluation
4. Cervical surgery in emergency situations:
a) Tracheotomy
b) Cervico-facial bleeding (Farabeuf, Béclair e Pirogoff triangules)
d) Cervical abscess drainage
5. Elective cervical surgery:
a) Submaxilectomy
b) Superficial and total parotidectomy; facial nerve monitoring
c) Sistrunk procedure
d) Benign cervical neoplasms and their surgical management
e) Neck dissection
f) Laringectomy
g) Surgical complications
